Hornets’ Nest

It hung out back in the evergreen
The biggest nest I’d ever seen
Well I grew up rough and I grew up lean
On the hatred that I’d seen

I’d watch them circle overhead
Devouring hours in my dread
Each night before I went to bed
I heard my old man say

“Now we don’t go stirring up a hornets' nest
We don’t go kickin’ up a scene
We don’t go showing all our ugliness
‘Cause we’ll get ‘em after dark with gasoline”

Well the boys I knew were out for blood
The boys I knew would sting you good
And you could paint your face all up with mud
But they’d find you anyway

One day I came around the bend
And watched them swarm around my friend
Now I knew their game would never end
So I turned and ran away

I snuck out back and got lit up
On stolen gin in a coffee cup
I swore I’d mess those hornets up
But I heard my old man say

“Now we don’t go stirring up a hornets' nest
We don’t go kickin’ up a scene
We don’t go showing all our ugliness
‘Cause we’ll get ‘em after dark with gasoline”

Now my old man’s buried underground
And the boys I knew still rule this town
And the evergreen was long cut down
But the hornets still remain

And I keep holding onto words that I don’t mean
And I keep dreaming of a can of gasoline
And I keep dreaming of a can of gasoline
